When I was a little girl — and I’m talking really young — my passion for cooking and baking began. I wasn’t a natural. I have plenty of memories of times that I would come dangerously close to burning our house down. I was basically every mother’s nightmare. Now that I cook with Kenya, I can only begin to appreciate what my poor mother must have gone through.

Eventually I graduated to much more manageable Betty Crocker mixes of blueberry muffins or brownies and lowered the risk of permanent damage to our home. I love the idea of mixes, because it’s a fun and easy way for kids to learn how to bake, but the only problem for me is that most mass market brands are filled with additives and preservatives.

I recently got introduced to Matisse and Jack’s “Bake At Home Snacks” and it was love at first sight. For parents who want to bake, or even introduce baking to their little ones, but don’t have the time or ingredients sitting around the kitchen to make homemade baked goods, this is a perfect idea and they’re packed with healthy ingredients and no added junk.

Over the past several weeks, Kenya and I test-baked every snack flavor they sell, and his favorite seemed to be the granola bites which also fit perfectly into his lunchbox (personally, I was a sucker for the cocoa bars). Kenya had a lot of fun pouring the ingredients out of the box and, with my help, adding the few necessary additions such as apple sauce, water and oil.
Within minutes we had healthy treats for everyone in our house to nibble on without guilt.

The best part is there’s a flavor for whatever you crave including chocolate chip and cranberry power snacks. Everyone in your family will have fun making and — more importantly — eating them!
