It’s not until you actually become a parent that you’re truly able to realize just how formidable a job it is. Between work, school, activities, friends, and various family commitments, it’s enough to make your head spin. Simply getting food on the table for everyone 2-3 times a day can be an immense challenge.

Growing up, my mom prepared most of our meals from scratch, but she always kept a box of one kind of mix or another handy in the cabinet to make her life easier. When warm blueberry muffins came out of the oven I may not have known exactly how they were prepared, but I knew that she had made something for us with a lot of love.

Being all too aware that it’s not easy to consistently make every meal from scratch, I teamed up with Krusteaz to use some of their boxed mixes to create fun twists on what they were originally intended for — for example, using pancake mix to make something other than just pancakes. As many of you probably know by now, I love taking something straightforward and incorporating a twist to turn it into something still simple, but totally unique. 

Using Krusteaz Cinnamon Swirl Crumb Cake & Muffins Mix as a base, I played around and came up with these Crumb Cake Muffins Doughnuts. They’re fluffy, golden, a major treat on winter weekends, and they only require two extra ingredients so they’ll feel like they’re totally from scratch. The best part is they take less than 30 minutes to prepare from start to finish, so the only thing that will be left for you to do is figure out what you’re going to do with all the extra time you saved by making something delicious with a little help from a mix. I’m sure it won’t be hard for you to come up with something!

Crumb Cake Muffin Doughnuts

Ingredients  

  • 1 box Krusteaz Cinnamon Swirl Crumb Cake & Muffin Mix
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 1 large egg

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • In a bowl, combine the cake mix, water and egg. Keep the crumb topping aside.
  • Pour the batter into a greased doughnut pan, filling about 3/4 full.
  • Top with the crumb topping, and press the topping down into the batter.
  • Bake for 22-26 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  1. I, too, am surprised and disappointed by this post. I have been a big fan of your healthy, easy recipes for kids and families and am disappointed that you would abandon those standards to promote a product that contains partially hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oils, which are not healthy for anyone, especially children. Also, what is the point of this recipe? It is merely the instructions that appear on the back of the box.

  2. I think this looks like a fun little project for when my kids need a quick pick-me-up or cure for the rainy day “I’m bored” blues. Boxed mixes in our house are usually more about the activity than the final product anyway. My daughter takes pride in herself when she can make things on her own (or with little supervision from me). Sometimes that’s worth more than worrying over every single ingredient.
