What’s the one food that we all love no matter how it’s prepared? For our family it’s potatoes! As we move through the winter you can find all kinda of different varieties of potatoes all over the farmers market and grocery store. These Crispy Smashed Potatoes are a side dish I make for my family every week.

I’ve been buying the most gorgeous baby potatoes so sweet and creamy inside they’re literally addictive! If you’re looking for a Thanksgiving side or an easy potato recipe during the week you have to make these Crispy Smashed Potatoes!

Ingredients for Crispy Smashed Potatoes

  • Baby potatoes
  • Olive oil
  • Kosher salt

How to Make Perfect Crispy Smashed Potatoes

1. Boil Potatoes to Fork Tender: Place baby potatoes in a pot of water with 2 tablespoons of salt, bring to a boil and cook for 20 minutes or until fork tender.

2. Drain and Cool: Drain the potatoes and let cool to the touch.

3. Smash with Hand: Place the potatoes on a cutting board or work surface and using the palm of your hand, press down firmly to smash the potato making sure it doesn’t come apart.

4. Heat Oil in Skillet: Heat a large sauce pan or cast iron skillet over medium high heat and cover the bottom of the pan with a thin layer of oil.

5. Cook Potatoes Until Crispy: Place the potatoes in the saute pan, sprinkle with salt and allow to cook for 5-6 minutes on each side (add more oil to the pan as you go) or until crispy and golden.

    1. Look forward to trying this in my cast iron. I have been making smashed red potatoes for years, but a little differently. I partially cook in microwave and use the bottom of a glass/mug etc. to smash when they are hot. Then I mist with olive oil and season – salt, pepper, garlic, onion, parsley – whatever you like, and then roast in the oven, turning over, until as crispy as you want. Some of my family like them really flat and crispy! Thanks for sharing – smashed are a favorite in our house!
